Car Crash Pile Up on Icy Italian Highway

After slushy snow re-froze on this expressway in Porto San Giorgio, Ascoli Piceno, Italy, it created an ultra-slick driving surface.
Cars would exit the tunnel at high speed and be immediately confronted by a blinding snow storm, frozen pavement, and a highway bending left, making it even harder to stay in control and see in front of you. The result was a multi-car pile-up that was captured by an unmanned traffic camera that went on for nearly 4 minutes before victims managed to go inside of the tunnel and flag motorists to slow down.

You are 100% correct about this incident.
I read in a former comment that the weather at the other side of the tunnel can be complet different and then you drive out of the tunnel and suddenly there is ice and snow. So I think that the most drivers were surprised and couldn’t stop their cars.

Probably not idiots, they just got too comfortable in the controlled conditions of that tunnel and didn’t anticipate the very bad conditions waiting at the the tunnel exit. I’ve travelled one tunnel in Italy that was more than 14 km long. When I entered the tunnel it was hot, sunny and dry. Wehn I exited on the other side of the mountain about 10 minutes later, it was a total downpour and I had a few seconds where I was totally blind, until the first wiper blade passed over the windshield.
People are idiots, a lot of those cars looked like they were going the speed limit. And then they are surprised when they lose control and crash
